Please join CHAW on July 2, 5-7pm for the opening of a show of oil paintings by John Morrell associate Professor of Painting and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at Georgetown University.
About his work, John Morrell says, ” The sense of the sublime in nature, of course, has a great tradition in both European and American landscape painting. But as I discovered during the 1980’s after France, when drawing in the woods of Maine, the American landscape is very different from Europe in its wildness. I began to sense the psychological effects of nature while spending hours working outdoors. I left behind picturesque views, and worked alone in the woods feeling both a oneness with nature…and the foreignness of my presence there.”
John Morrell is a native of Albany, NY and has painted and taught in the Washington, DC area for over 30 years. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University and a Masters of Fine Arts from George Washington University, and subsequently taught in the Art Departments at both universities. From 1984 to 2002 he was the Gallery Director and Visiting Professor at Georgetown University.
