February's Mind of the Artist: Sarah Porter

February 11, 2019

We welcome Sarah Porter as our February Artist of the Month! Sarah's commitment to experimenting and evolving through education and mastering different art forms and techniques is awe inspiring. Welcome Sarah!

Sarah Porter = Experiment and Evolve

Originally from western Pennsylvania, I have lived in Washington DC (on and off) for almost the last twenty years.  My work in art began with studying figure drawing and painting (watercolor) and design with Jackie Saunders and Lisa Semarad at the Art League in Alexandria. Then I added an additional dimension by exploring more extensively three-dimensional art, learning sculpting in terra cotta and plaster from Prof. Zdeno Mayercak at Montgomery College. This evolution and attraction to 3D forms extends also to my study at the Art League of creating fine metal hollowware using silversmithing techniques.  Simultaneously I began extensively experimenting with textile surface design through dyeing and printing, studying with Candy Edgerley at the Corcoran College of Art & Design.  From surface and immersion dyeing to silk screen and block printing to shibori dyeing techniques, silversmithing, and clay sculpture, I now use a variety of methods to explore movement of natural systems and their underlying energies. The wealth of arts education opportunities around Washington is such a joy to experience.

In addition to exhibiting in juried shows at the Capitol Hill Art League where I am a member and was on its steering committee for nine years, my work has been exhibited in at the 2009 Smithsonian Craft Show, at the Lorton Workhouse, Gallery10 in Dupont Circle, at the Art League Gallery in the Torpedo Factory, at CityGallery, and at Meredith College, North Carolina.
